Movies Galore of Milwaukee takes a look at director Mathew Kister’s anthology Sequel “Chills Down Your Spine” for 2020!

Written by David Strege

Greetings Galorians, it’s been several years since I’ve actually written up a review not because i hate writing just time constrictive and health issues but let’s not make this about me…

Brought to us by Dead Lantern Pictures is a 2020 anthology sequel called “Chills Down Your Spine” to their 2015 “Shivers Down Your Spine,” which was definitely a different Caliber of production that they had to amp up for this vein of a project.

The film begins with a character we know from Shivers by the name of Jeff played by Steve Eaton where he’s won some tickets at some arcade place that equal the amount for this Lamp… in search of Sabiah instead rubbing out her sister Mahktoonah an overly bubbly and slightly annoying Genie whom doesn’t quite understand how to be what she is, played by Megan Garcia as Megan Shepard.

Be that as it may Jeff and Mahktoonah also Garcia end up going on a journey that parallel’s Homer’s Odyssey to a certain extant making up the first wrap-around “Road Trip”… yes you heard right in fact there’s two the other called “Com’on Baby Light My Flame” where a Leatherface-like character recites some incantations that make Sabiah appear, wishes for her to be chained to his rack and so swap stories while Jeff and Mahktoonah do the same on their pilgrimage…

In The Devil’s Corkscrew a miner sits around a campfire as a hotshot quickdraw artist on his way to deadwood… as a word to the wise spins this yarn of a group that sold their souls for riches…

In Isabella’s Return we get an animated short version of Matt’s feature length feature failed venture of a local legend of a corpse that returns… for blood…

In The Ditch told by Jeff a woman covered in blood not her own, flags down a driver along a deserted road, doesn’t trust her situation and cuts out down the road only to pick up even worse trouble….

In Bed and Breakfast a young woman’s car broke down near a bed and breakfast she was already on her way to, is greeted by a overly friendly and pale-faced butler after pleasantry’s ascends to the room given to her and wakes to a nightmare…

The Intermission is done in the style of a refreshment commercial/ Mystery Science Theater kind of send off or homage with Matt’s intro to his Robot Mummy from “Return of the Robo-Mummy from Outer Space Part 7” a film still in edit stage, another Genie and Mark Popejoy…

In Hysteria! a husband and wife get killed which begins a ghostly tale of Who-dun-nit with a bunch of dummies…

In Blood Model an art class is tasked with painting female and male nudes while one obsessed emo-looking student seems to be at first glance behind the disappearances of students… one might look closer at the muse…

In The Whirlpool of Night we have an all female cast of a noir B/W segment of a thief who’d botched a bank job is blackmailed into stealing something from one of the most body-guarded women only to get sucked literally deeper…

Last but not least in the last segment The Calling of the Things Beyond is a send up to the works of H.P. Lovecraft where the daughter of an infamous play-write name of Pickman gets tasked by a Mr. Randolph to rewrite the play for a new production only can she prevent her cast from disaster…

As far as my favorite segments I’ll have to say are Bed and Breakfast because of the butler guy i loved his character he had some wicked humor to his dialogue, Hysteria and Things Beyond as far as segments that I enjoyed the most. Production value was definitely greater for putting these shorts together.

I liked how Matt tied together the first anthology with Jeff and a couple that ended picking Mahktoonah and Jeff up in this feature but I’ll let you figure out whom as i totally recommend this weird and whimsical venture. of course if i were female I’m not sure how I’d feel having to be topless through an entire role… definitely give her a watch at least once if you can it is certain to rivet one to their seat. The atmosphere wascertainly up my alley…
